Thyme can be used internally or externally. It is antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, and vermifugal (especially against hookworms.) Thyme has been used for thousands of years as a culinary as well as medicinal herb. It is a common ingredient in mouthwashes and retards plaque formation and gingivitis. You can combine thyme with Peppermint, Rosemary, Lemon, amd/or Tea Tree.

Studies

A Japanese study performed in 2001 tested thyme for its effectiveness against Streptococcus pneumoniae, a common cause of pneumonia.  The other two effective oils were cinnamon bark and lemongrass.  In this study, 14 oils were tested on the following pathogens: Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus.

Similar results were found in another study.  Thyme was the most effective, followed by cinnamon bark and clove bud.
